Recovery with TestDisk was attempted first. Find files with TestDisk and PhotoRecįor testing TestDisk and PhotoRec 7.2, an unmountable 16GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade USB thumb drive (opens in new tab) with files of various types was connected to a standard USB 2.0 port on a Dell G5 5505 SE laptop (opens in new tab) running Windows 10. A recovered partition image can be checked in TestDisk using the terminal. This works in largely the same way as the CLI tool, with the options displayed in a single window rather than a step-by-step series of commands. This is now going to be one of those programs that will remain in my tools.txt file in dropbox and Drive for life.PhotoRec also has a graphical user interface (GUI) available to make photo recovery easier (Image credit: CGSecurity) I run it again and boom drive 1 found and file system restored yay! Now for the backup drive 2 and shit, no file system but it has the files and a copy function so over they go to the main HDD.

It's free so that checks that box and no hidden fees or limits.

I come across an old form post in German on Tomshardware taking about TestDisk and I'm like okay damn I'll give this a go. There is a 4GB restore limit for the program trial and it's $68+ for the basic level of the product, it's too far from payday to justify that much for a once off operation so again more swearing ensues. So I go ahead with the Windows install and get into the OS sort out my network driver via my phone and usb (hurrah for p&p) and download and install EaseUS backup and run it and it starts returning files to be recovered it says it's going to take 6 hours so I head to bed and think I'll deal with this all in the morning.Ĭome morning the scan is finished and I go and click recover, nope. I frantically search google and come across a few hits for on various forums they have a product called EaseUS for Windows data recovery and I think I'm saved. :cripes: moment ensues and OH wonders why I'm swearing loudly and that I need to not wake the kids. Don't ask me why but for some reason I deleted every partition available including the ones with ALL my files and backups. I go to the Windows installer and select Advanced which I've done countless times at this point in my life and go ahead and delete the C:\ Partition ready to clean it out and reformat it for install. I get done with that and I'm happy I have everything backed up to spare HDD and I can move forward with the clean and install. So I went and decided last night I'll reinstall my entire machine and went through the usual backup process etc which I do about once a month anyway.
